Subversive Intent from San Diego, CA

You should know who Subversive Intent is because they’re telling you exactly why they’re in your ear. Formed in 2025, the San Diego hardcore band’s self-titled LP is intentionally direct, transparent, and reverent to their influences. Hardcore in E-standard that’s anything but derivative, the band’s 2025 demo mixed the D-beat spirit with a lead guitar assault akin to Battalion of Saints or Dr. Know. Honoring the power and style of classic hardcore, their approach was shaped by foundational bands such as Crucifix, Poison Idea, and Final Conflict, with nods to Japanese and European rippers that added a fresh crunch and bite. Vehemently anti-fascist and willing to commit to a side, guitarist and main songwriter Zack Nelson’s aim is “To let people know what our politics are. The record is a direct strike against DHS, billionaires, politicians, capitulators, petrofascists, war criminals, and polluters.”

Recorded in 16 hours in two rapid-fire sessions with Jared Cluff at Left Coast Case & Sound (Take Offense, Rod of Correction) and mixed/mastered by Ricky Olson (Destruct, Ultimate Disaster), Subversive Intent’s debut LP speaks directly to the here-and-now with a deep understanding of hardcore history in their quiver. Bookended by the Agnostic Front-inspired surge of “Capitulation” and the haunting hook of “Plasticosis,” ten songs blaze and punch through a broad palette of influences spanning decades of hardcore in 12 minutes. Tighter, faster, and experimenting with new tempos, these ten songs distill the band’s collective influences into a sharper delivery system without departing from the mission. Like the stark black-and-white artwork throughout their debut 12” on Philadelphia's Rebirth Records (Scarab, Start Today), Subversive Intent leaves no gray area on who they are, where they’re from, and who’s in their sights. - Anthony Pappalardo
