New Around Here

Oops. It's been quite a while since the last time one of these articles was published! Let's not harp on it and get down to business instead. Many bands have been added to the artist directory in the last few months, but below are nine of the latest and greatest. As always, introducing and exploring new bands and sounds is the idea.

If you have any band suggestions, please contact [email protected]. I'm always willing to give something new a spin and share what I like (and some stuff I don't) with the world.

ABSORB

What Is It? Devastating death doom out of Ontario who have been around for over a decade but finally feel like they have found their voice in new vocalist Erik Thorkildsen. Confirmation can be found by pressing play on their upcoming EP Smog, scheduled for release on July 26th via Hypaethral Records. The record is three tracks, but as any doom aficionado could expect, it's not very short. That's okay because a full LP of material as punishing and unsettling as this could ruin a day. Fans of Primitive Man, Cough, and the more straightforward recordings of Thou will be intrigued.

THE ANTIKAROSHI

What Is It? Experimental post-hardcore trio from Potsdam, Germany. On May 31st, they released their sixth full-length album, L’inertie Polaire, via Exile On Mainstream Records. Despite their geographical distance, the band is sonically right at home in the punk and hardcore scenes in Washington, D.C. The Fugazi comparison is inevitable when listening to the new album, but there's more to it than that. The album opener, "Gravity," is a great place to start, and you'd be wise to push play on the music video below.

BØW

What Is It? Energetic hardcore punk four-piece from Santa Cruz, Portugal. They've been active since 2021 and already have two EPs under their belts. The latest, Infectious Salty Assault II, was released in June (Raging Planet Records and Ring Leader Label) and features five impassioned tracks that are sometimes melodic but always aggressive.

DUHKHA

What Is It? A metallic hardcore quartet from Southern California featuring several scene veterans, most notably guitarist Keith Barney (Eighteen Visions, Throwdown). Their debut LP is scheduled for an official release date of August 8th on Good Fight Music. The records first single "Ictal" dropped a couple of weeks ago and is an excellent indicator of the chaos to come. Fans of Deadguy, Coalesce, and Botch will enjoy this!

FELDSPAR

What Is It? Hardcore punk in the shadow of the Vatican in Rome, Italy. It's not always fast, but it's quite catchy and anthemic. Their tunes have an emotional quality that walks up to the line of corniness but never crosses it. Many comparisons have been made to Comeback Kid, and that's a good place to start. Check out "Dead Friends Still Alive" below, but if you'd like an example of a more energetic track, try "Cobblestones" HERE instead.

MAATKARE

What Is It? An all-female death metal trio with a thematic connection to Egyptian history and mythology. Easy comparisons will be Nile, Scarab, or Arch Enemy, and it'd be hard to argue otherwise. They've got a surprisingly bombastic and powerful punch behind the few singles released so far. Check out the latest below!

PALMAR DE TROYA

What Is It? Formed in 2019, PALMAR DE TROYA is a collection of friends and musicians who have created a more genuine and experimental band than their previous projects. The result is a conglomeration of post-hardcore, indie, and noise rock that captivated listeners on their 2020 self-titled debut EP. Among the impressed and intrigued was Reptilian Records boss Chris X, who quickly got on board to release the band's forthcoming 10" EP aptly titled II.

PARAGNOSIS

What Is It? A progressive instrumental metal trio based out of New York City. They originally intended to have a vocalist, but those plans were derailed before their debut EP was recorded. In June, the band released their second EP, an eponymous effort that features six songs as intended from their inception. It feels like the real debut of Paragnosis, and they sound more comfortable about it. The live-tracked recording from Jamie Uertz of Silver Cord Studios certainly helps. Fans of Animals As Leaders, Russian Circles, and Long Distance Calling may like what they hear.

THE PHANTOM EYE

What Is It? A stoner rock trio from Brooklyn, New York, with a heavy psychedelic vibe. They put a lot of care into their visual presentation, as shown in the high-quality videos released for every track. "Black Hotel" is the latest release in their trickle of singles and is a soothing wash of melody and true rock and roll soul. Hopefully, the band will put together an LP shortly. I can imagine them on the roster of several stoner rock record labels; it feels inevitable.
