Austrian noise rockers DESOLAT have dropped a music video for "The Art Of Shit" from their upcoming third LP, People As Idiots & Idiots As Leaders. The record will be released digitally and on marbled oxblood vinyl on October 9th and disseminated to the masses as a DIY collaborative release by nine labels and three distributors from seven countries, including Reptilian Records and Exotic Fever Records in the US, Bloodshed666 Records and Grazil Records in Austria, Araki Records in France, minoRobscuR in Germany, Geenger Records in Croatia, Rat Run Records in the UK, and Geertruida in the Netherlands, and distributed by Dischord Direct, Stickfigure, and Sounds Of Subterrania.
Guitarist/vocalist Alfred Satani comments, “‘The Art Of Shit’ is one out of two songs from the album which are out of the overall concept on the decline of democracy and the loss utopia. The song’s lyrics offer a lighthearted exploration of the mechanisms of the art and culture industry and its marketing strategies—and, not infrequently, the self-marketing strategies of artists themselves, particularly on social media.
“It’s important to note that the song is not anti-art! The personal satisfaction and empowerment that people can experience through creating art is a thoroughly positive aspect—one that should absolutely be encouraged. However, this is a more psychosocial and emotional approach, which is certainly closer to art in an authentic or idealistic sense than the profit-driven logic of the art markets under capitalism.
“When the song’s lyrics were sung in the recording studio, the sound engineer raised his eyebrows and asked with a smug grin, ‘Alfred, are you making fun of the art world?’—YES! These superlatives and attributions of meaning in flowery, intellectual phrases are so often just ridiculous bullshit bingo, vain and transparent!
“Musically the song is quite punkish and inspired by the likes of Lard, Ministry, and Minor Threat. Although it has a very sludgy middle-part in the vein of the band’s all-time favorites, Bongzilla.”
