This edition of New Around Here will attempt to introduce a bulk of new bands. Twenty to be exact. All of which deserve a shot to impress and gain new fans. As usual, there is something from every genre covered on the site and podcast. Check it out!

BARATRO

What Is It? A noise and sludge rock trio out of Milan, Italy featuring Unsane bassist Dave Curran. Their debut album The Sweet Smell of Unrest dropped in early February courtesy of Improved Sequence Records. Heavy and abbrasive noise rock with a lot of metallic edges. "If you like aggressive music that will blow your wig off with it’s sheer heaviness than pal, Baratros got you covered." - Ryan Canavan of Hex Records.

BARREN WOMB

What Is It? Norwegian noise rock that lean heavy on the rock of it all. They've been around since 2011 and recently released their fifth album Chemical Tardigrade on Fucking North Pole Records/Blues For The Red Sun. Recommended if you like; The Melvins, Big Business, Fugazi, and even Clutch or At The Drive-In. The excellent single "Squat Walker" was pegged as the closer for a recent episode of Getting It Out Podcast, but if you missed it there, check out the video here!

BLOSSOM

What Is It? A San Diego-based shoegaze duo comprised of songwriter Mateo Ruiz and guitarist Love. They released Reflections, their first EP in 2022, as high school teenagers. This year, they will return with their Really Rad Records debut EP, Florecer, produced by Nick Bassett of Whirr on March 18th.

CELL PRESS

What Is It? Chaotic noise rock and hardcore clash when Montreal's CELL PRESS pick up their instruments. The members have previously spent time in bands like The Great Sabatini, Biipiigwan, I Hate Sally, The Chariot, and their sound is an amalgamation of their past. Their debut LP Cages is scheduled for release on March 8th via The Ghost Is Clear Records (Vinyl), Ancient Temple Recordings (Vinyl), and No List Records (Cassette). Fans of KEN Mode, Unsane, and Keelhaul will like what they hear.

THE CONFORMISTS

What Is It? Would you believe it? It's more noise rock! Ok, maybe that's not a fair genre tag for this trio formed back in 1996. The St. Louis-based rockers are more gentle than the bands bearing the same genre tag above. It's rock, but its ugly...and noisey. Noise rock! You get it right? Anyway, THE CONFORMISTS will release their fifth LP Midwestless, recorded and mixed by the legendary Steve Albini, on April 5th via Computer Students.

Pre-order Midwestless HERE.

CUNTROACHES

What Is It? With a name like CUNTROACHES, it should come as no surprise that this band makes music that could be described as caustic, scathing, and intentionally obtuse. The Berlin-based trio splays itself across several subgenres of underground music. It all feels experimental on their self-titled debut LP and dips it's toes in black metal, noise rock, and punk. SKiN GRAFT Records seems like the perfect home for the demented project.

DISSIMULATOR

What Is It? Technical death metal out of Montréal with a debut LP entitled Lower Form Resistance out now on 20 Buck Spin. It would be impossible not to mention the legendary Voivod when describing their sound, but there's certainly more of the "extreme" with DISSIMULATOR. Members of the trio have spent time with Chthe’ilist, Atramentus, and Beyond Creation so there is no need to question their proficiency without even hearing a note.

EMPIRE DEMOLITION

What Is It? Having come together in 2022, EMPIRE DEMOLITION is a relatively new trio playing grinding metallic hardcore punk. Their debut EP Defenestration, self released early this year, is a strictly DIY project. Aside from tracking the drums with Duncan Slack, the band engineered the release from the sounds to the visuals. If you like Portrayal Of Guilt, this band is for you.

THE END OF ERNIE

What Is It? Hardcore punk from Belgium formed all the back in 1989. Earlier this year, they released their third and finest LP Controversial Comfort on Lost Culture Records and it shows their band at their absolute best. There's metallic influences from crust and crossover, but these veterans are dyed in the wool hardcore punks and now is the time to get on board.

GHAUL

What Is It? Unrelenting hardcore out of Vancouver with a new EP titled Down Here Where I Am out now on the emergent Rest Assured Records. The four tracks rip, rattle, and pummel in a whirlwind of chunky metallic riffs, simple rhythms, and gritty vocals.

HANDS OF GORO

What Is It? Current and ex-members of Slough Feg, Spirit Adrift, Carcass, and more playing traditional heavy metal since 2016. This year, they self recorded, produced, and released their eponymous debut LP. It's eight tracks that any fan of classic metal will find palatable.

HOLLOW LEG

What Is It? Floridian sludge laden doom metal notably featuring Bloodlet's Scott Angelacos on vocals. Already four albums deep since forming in 2010, on May 3rd they will self release a brand new EP titled Dust. For fans of Eyehategod, Wo Fat, and Junior Bruce.

L'APPEL DU VIDE

What Is It? Let's just call it post-punk, but please acknowledge there is more to this Chemnitz, Germany-based quartet than the confines of any one genre. The band has an expansive and artistic approach to rock and roll that allows their upcoming LP Metro to fit somewhere in the realms of alt or noise rock. It's not quite abrasive, but there are some rough edges. L'appel Du Vide are truly hard to categorize, so it's best you listen for yourself.

LIFE CYCLES

What Is It? Punishing Texas metallic hardcore. Don't be shocked to see these guys transcending heavy music subgenre's as their brand of crossover will appeal to metal heads and hardcore kids worldwide. Their new EP Portal To The Unknown on 1126 Records is another example of the dominant forces bashing out new music in the Texas heat.

SLOPE

What Is It? A funky German hardcore band that happily and righteously explodes genre boundaries. Their new album Freak Dreams (Century Media Records) is a potentially the feel good hardcore record of the year. Fans of Turnstile, Rage Against The Machine, Dog Eat Dog, and Beastie Boys must check it out.

SPACED

What Is It? Buffalo hardcore with a ton of finesse who have a brand new LP This Is All We Ever Get is out now on Revelation Records. SPACED bring a style all their own with plenty of glimpses back to the bands that helped establish their label home in the late 80's.

Get This Is All We Ever Get HERE.

STELLAR REMAINS

What Is It? A Brisbane-based one man band of sci-fi death metal. It's not quite Nocturnus or Blood Incantation, but pretty close. There are progressive elements on debut EP Wastelands, but for now they are reigned in. We'll call this death metal before anything else and it would take a large departure to change that.

Get Wastelands HERE.

TAKE HOLD

What Is It? Melodic hardcore from New Zealand formed in 2017. They've released a couple EP's, but the latest single "Forfeit" showcases the band at their best yet. Maybe they would have fit in best in the mid to late 2000's, but we're happy to have them here and now. Recommended for fans of Have Heart, Time & Pressure, and Champion.

Take Hold on GettingItOut.net.

UNBORN GHOST

What Is It? "Unborn Ghost is awesome! ... Reminds me of The Black Heart Procession, Black Cat Music, Neurosis. ... It harkens back to what I thought was a very cool time for music. ... Sounds great as well." Says Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba. That's what one guy thinks with a lot more clout than mine, but if you want my opinion, read the full review of Airs of Contempt and Derision HERE.

WORST DOUBT

What Is It? Brutal and bombastic metallic hardcore from France. They've got a new EP released earlier this year on DAZE titled Immortal Pain that is an early contender for the best heavy hardcore record of the year. If Merauder, Hatebreed, or King Nine is up your alley, you're going to love WORST DOUBT.
