Contrarian Premiere "Berlin Parklife" Music Video

Norwegian artist Gøran Karlsvik works at a prolific pace. As the voice and creative mind behind DAMOKLES, THIS SECT, ENDTIMERS, ZAP, and more, he seems to always have something new to unveil. Today, Getting It Out is happy to present "Berlin Parklife," the latest track from his solo electronic project CONTRARIAN. The song will be part of the upcoming EP The Berlin Trilogy to be released via Sect Appeal Records. The music video was shot and directed by Karlsvik himself in Charlottenburg, Berlin.

Expanding on the project, Karslvik comments, "Earlier this year, I applied for a work grant from a musician’s organization; NOPA (Norwegian Society of Composers and Lyricists), and to my utter delight I got the grant! My work stay was in the district of Charlottenburg in Berlin, Germany, which is a surprisingly sedate corner of an otherwise bustling metropolis. Huge, almost endless, park areas. Only one large shopping street, thankfully far away from me. Footage was therefore filmed on my daily morning runs through the park areas, I really enjoyed exploring these.

To capture some less sunny local vibes, I found a lot of inspiration in David Bowie's timess Berlin trilogy, especially the B-side of "Low". I also wanted to channel some of the vibes I remember from my brief looks into Berlin’s 90s clubbing era, particularly the grimy hedonistic techno that got played at Berghain (and probably is still playing to this very day, I didn’t bother to stop by at 03:30 AM and wait in line alongside raver tweakers for hours to check). To go even more local, I also got back into the proto-industrial legends Einstürzende Neubauten, especially the rattling ambiance found in their poppier albums such as “Tabula Rasa” and “Ende Neu”. My electronic heroes Boards of Canada also served as guiding stars, they kind of always factor into the Contrarian sound.

"Berlin Parklife" is the first part of a Contrarian Berlin trilogy, compiled of material composed during the stay. Why? Because all great artists must have a Berlin era, just look at aforementioned Bowie, or Nick Cave, or Iggy (hehe)! This’ll be a three-track EP, with accompanying music videos, plus ca. three bonus tracks and perhaps some surprise remixes. Also got work done on my other bands and projects while in Berlin, such as Damokles and Endtimers, so stay tuned for more sound and vision."
